Mount Kilimanjaro travel information

Mount Kilimanjaro lies a scant 3 degrees south of equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania.  Its location on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height strongly influence the climate, vegetation, animal life and the climbing conditions.  It is made up of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), Mawenzi 16,896 feet (5,149 meters); and Shira 13,000 feet (3,962 meters). Apart from its dramatic geological features Mount Kilimanjaro is the perfect destination for wildlife and plant enthusiasts. Kilimanjaro contains an example of virtually every ecosystem on earth.  Glacier, snowfield, desert, alpine moorland, savannah, and tropical jungle are among those found on the mountain, making the descent from the summit similar to walking from the North Pole to the Equator in the space of a few kilometers.

The mountain can be climbed any time of the year, although the best periods are from July to October and from December to February. The ascent can be made by any normal fit person with the assistance of a guide and porters via a number of routes.

TEN reasons why you should climb with MAKO Tours and Safaris Ltd:

1 .  We care deeply about your mountain experience (if any, no experience required)
2.  We have our own operation in Tanzania - we're not just agents - and offer the best value for your money
3.  We use the best route (Most recommended) - Machame, Lemosho and Shira via the Western Breach (see the map above on the left side, see below for route information)
4.  We give you enough time to acclimatize - 98% summit success rate
5.  We use the best tents on the mountain
6.  We provide Experienced Mountain guides who work with us for over ten year already
7.  We have good communication via Cell phone and Radio calls
8.  We give you a choice of meals, and bottled water where we can
9.  We carry the best safety equipment on the mountain, including oxygen on special trips
10. We care about our porters (supplying them with tents, clothes and sleeping bags) and the environment

Because we give our clients time to acclimatize (we do not race to the top but care about health and quality), we have almost no people that suffer from altitude sickness.
Altitude sickness is a serious condition which, untreated, can result in loss of life! So take time to acclimatize!

The Machame route
takes you through the rain forest. It is a route often used by tourist because of its beauty.
Rating = recommended

The Lemosho route takes you through some beautiful wilderness. Although it is as beautiful as Machame, it is not as often used by tourists, what raises its rating.
Rating = very recommended

The Shira route takes you over the ridge of the mountain, so providing beautiful views on all sides!
Rating = very recommended
